Herringbone lays rectangular pavers in pairs at right angles. It is the usual pattern for driveways, because the stones lock together in both directions and do not creep under braking cars. This calculator starts with a 200 × 100 mm paver, the herringbone pattern and the Drivable load class.
Straight or 45°
Herringbone has two rotation angles in the planner. At 0° the paver edges run parallel to the border, and the edges mostly need half stones. The shopping list shows those as purchasable sub-stones, since many paver lines sell them ready-made. At 45° the pattern runs on the diagonal. It looks more dynamic, but almost every edge piece becomes an angled cut.
Keeping cuts under control
- Pick the start corner so full pavers sit along the most visible edge.
- Run the optimizer. It tries joint widths from 2 to 20 mm and area changes within 5% and shows the cut count for each.
- Use the laying guide on site. It lists upcoming cuts so you can do them in one trip to the saw.

How many pavers per m² for herringbone?
50 pavers per m² at 200 × 100 mm, without joints or waste. The rotation does not change that number, only the kind of cuts at the edges.
Does herringbone need a special paver?
Any rectangular paver works if it is twice as long as it is wide. Enter other sizes under Custom dimensions and apply the pattern again.
